The Dry Eye Consult FAQs

What Happens in a Dry Eye Consult?

We will be investigating all possible reasons for your dryness signs and symptoms. In order to streamline your visit, we ask that you have a complete eye examination done within one year prior to your dry eye consult. Please have records sent to our office to verify this has been completed.

  • Your visit will start with a dryness questionnaire to help determine the severity of your symptoms.
  • Next you will be asked questions about your general health, daily activities, visual work habits, cosmetic use, and skin care.
  • Your tear quality and quantity will be measured with the Oculus Keratograph 5M instrument.
  • Images will also be taken of the front surface of your eyes, eyelids, and the skin around the eyes to document your health.
  • The results of these measurements will be explained to you and you will receive treatment recommendations.

What Does Not Happen in a Dry Eye Consult?

  • You will not be checked for glasses or have your eyes dilated at your visits in in the dry eye service. We will be happy to assist you with those needs at a different appointment.

What Should I bring to a Dry Eye Consult?

  • Please arrive with clean skin, and no make-up. We need to see your skin and eyelids in their natural state.  Feel free to bring your cosmetics with you to apply following your visit.
  • If you would like your cosmetic ingredients evaluated, please bring a list or the actual cosmetics with you so they can be evaluated.
  • Please avoid using artificial tears and eyedrop medications within 2 hours of your exam, if possible.
  • Bring a list of all current medication, vitamins, and all current dry eye therapies with you to be evaluated.

How Much Does a Dry Eye Consult Cost?

  • The consult examination and photography can be billed to your medical insurance. Please check with your individual plan to see if medical care is covered, as this will be a medical, NOT a vision appointment.
  • There will be an out-of-pocket cost for the advanced tear testing of $75. Care credit and health savings accounts can be applied.

Cynosure Max G/ Intense Pulsed Light FAQs

What is Intense Pulse Light/ Max G Treatment?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a treatment that targets the underlying cause of ocular surface dryness: inflammation. In both inflammatory dry eye and ocular rosacea, irregular blood vessels have grown into the eyelids to supply the eye with angry, inflammatory white blood cells.  The broad- spectrum light of IPL targets these irregular blood vessels in the skin of the face and eyelid, causing them to regress. With fewer roadways to inflammation, the eye, eyelids, and facial skin are calmed and visibly less red.

IPL is series of 3 -5 treatments, which work together over time, usually spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Your doctor will determine the number of treatments necessary to complete a full series, based on your individual eye health.  Please budget at least 45minutes for treatment preparation and follow-up instructions.

Who is NOT a candidate for IPL?

IPL is mainly attracted to red and brown pigments in the skin. Anyone higher than a Fitzpatrick Skin Type IV may be at risk for permanent skin discoloration, so would not be a candidate.  We offer other great OSD treatments for patients who are not candidates, including LipiFlow and Tempsure Envi.
Those who have been tanning in any way, whether via the sun, a tanning bed, spray, or bottle will need to wait a month before starting IPL therapy to insure we are able to treat the skin with the appropriate energy levels.
Our doctors will determine your Fitzpatrick Skin Type and suitability for IPL at your dry eye consult.
